Bunbury is compact — but which side of the peninsula you pick changes the trip.Marlston Hill & the waterfront
The strip between the marina and Koombana Bay, under the candy-striped lighthouse. This is where most of the newer hotels and apartments are, and it is the best choice if you want to walk to dinner: the Bonnefoi Boulevard restaurants, the marina and the Dolphin Discovery Centre are all within a few minutes on foot. Closest base for anyone here to see the dolphins.
The city centre & Victoria Street
The older pub-and-motel end of town, on and around the Victoria Street “cappuccino strip”. Generally the cheaper option, still walkable to the waterfront in about ten minutes, and the best pick if you want cafes, the historic pubs and the CBD street-art trail on your doorstep.
Ocean Drive & Back Beach
The surf side of the peninsula, facing the Indian Ocean. Quieter, more low-rise and holiday-flat in character, with the basalt rocks and the surf beach across the road. Worth it if the beach is the point of the trip; you will want the car for dinner.
Caravan parks & further out
Bunbury has holiday parks close to town and around the Leschenault Estuary, plus cheaper beds in Australind and Eaton, ten to fifteen minutes north. These are the value options in school holidays, when the waterfront books out first and prices climb hardest.
When to book
Bunbury fills up in the WA school holidays, over long weekends, and during dolphin season from roughly November to April — the waterfront goes first. Outside those periods you can usually book late without paying much of a premium.
If you are driving the Perth–Margaret River route, Bunbury is the logical overnight stop and is generally cheaper than staying in the wine region itself.
Make it a weekend
